ENGINERD® INSIGHTS
- RS-232: Developed over 60 years ago by EIA, RS-232 is the elder statesman of serial communications and it’s still quite relevant for industrial communication
- Still widely used for barcode scanners, weigh stations, LED displays, and so on
- RS-485: Almost as ancient as its RS-232 counterpart, RS-485 is also still relevant today
- As the standard physical layer for Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS & BACnet MS/TP, it is alive and kicking
- RS-422: Also developed by EIA, RS-422 is a robust physical layer that supports full-duplex and longer runs than its counterparts
- CAN: Initially developed by BOSCH in the late 80s, CAN found its way to the factory floor due to its robust physical layer and inexpensive physical components
- Ethernet: It was created in the 1970s for inter-island communications in Hawaii
- It’s quickly become the standard physical layer for industrial communications throughout the world
- TCP is connection-based and UDP is connectionless
- Layers 5 through 7 are designated for higher-level protocols such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP
